Edgar Jacob Striffler

Edgar Jacob Striffler, age 71, a funeral director for 53 years and a well-known civic leader, died at his residence in, White Oak. Mr. Striffler, who’s father, the late Frank Adam Striffler (a long-time undertaker in Meadville, PA) joined his brother the late Frank Sebastian Striffler, in the operation of Striffler Brothers Funeral Home in McKeesport following his graduation from the University of Pittsburgh in 1912.


In 1927, Mr. Striffler and his brother merged their firm with Hunter and Edmundson to form the present company of Hunter-Edmundson-Striffler. Mr. Striffler served as president.  He founded Striffler’s of White Oak in 1956 in conjunction with his son, Frank Sheridan Striffler. He was a member of the National Selected Morticians, the Order of the Golden Rule, St. Angela’s Merici Roman Catholic Church of White Oak and its Holy Name Society; the Youghiogheny Country Club; B.P.O. Elks, Lodge 136; and McKeesport Aerie 285, Fraternal Order of Eagles. He had served as the Treasurer of the Knights of Columbus, McKeesport Council 955, and, in 1934 as president of the McKeesport Kiwanis Club. As a young man, he was active in athletics. He was also considered one of the area’s contract bridge players. Mr. Striffler was born in Meadville, PA, the son of the late Frank Adam and Helen Michel Striffler. He was survived by his wife, Hilda Sheridan Striffler; sons, Edgar Jacob Striffler, Jr. who resided in Washington, D.C., Frank Sheridan Striffler who resided in White Oak and Stephen J. who was still at home; daughters, Mrs. John (Ferne) Erskine who was at the U.S. Embassy in Canberra, Australia, and Mrs. Vernon (Gail) Posey who resided in Miami, FL.; 14 grandchildren; and a sister, Clara Peters who resided in McKeesport.


Friends were received at the Hunter-Edmundson-Striffler Funeral Home. A solemn high mass of requiem was celebrated at 11a.m. in St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church with Msgr. Leo A. McCrory officiating. Interment followed.
